From the path of "sinful humanity" to Calvary. From all over the world to Goa.In the year 2006, an unusual collection of crosses, from all over the world, made its way to Goa in India.Maendra Alvares, who is the collector, brought home over 250 crosses that are beautiful, each one different and unique. He bought most of these crosses during his travel through eight different European countries in the same year. He then added to this collection by visiting homes in Goa. Many people generously gifted crosses they owned, to help swell this collection. Maendra then kept adding crosses made of different materials. This was the beginning of a unique and unusual journey, the first of its kind in these parts of the world. It is not just a collection housed in a museum, but a journey through the history of the cross and its various modifications, to suit different and specific beliefs and cultures, through the ages. These crosses are classified according to the legends in a book titled "In Search" which enables the visitor to trace and enjoy joy the intricate differences of each cross, and also know the legends behind each of famous Goan countryside crosses. This unusual collection of crosses was inaugurated on the 24th September 2006, by His Excellency Shri S.C. Jamir, The Governor of Goa in the presence of Shri Digambar Kamat, Minister for Art and Culture. The Exhibit is presently housed in a museum adjacent to "Ancestral Goa", the Big Foot, in Loutolim. There are 80 classifications of crosses housed here. In panels with transparent enclosures, which makes it easy for viewing and studying the exhibits.
This museum was formally inaugurated by His Eminence Paul Cardinal Poupard, in the same year. The "Cross Collection" besides being the first of its kind. is also amongst one of the most unusual collections. At present the classified collection boasts of 1060 crosses. We are located along the famous Colva Beach on the Northern side of Colva Beach in South Goa, India. In total, the beach is over 20 km long and is lined with coconut palms – away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and overcrowded resorts.

Our two storey Bungalow is comfortable, modern, yet very natural & probably the closest available to the beachside in the Colva area. We offer a complete Villa Rental for a maximum of six people.

Enjoy true Goan hospitality with local bars and restaurants, breath-taking scenic sunset views and the daily sunshine. Colva offers excellent value for money and there are certainly plenty of activities taking place or you can just lay in the sun and relax.

An unusual sink fitted in the window still serves admirably for those who wish to avail of it. A vast kitchen with huge firewood stoves, wide shelves and a huge store room, aside, leads to the 'Angonn' which was a very traditional little square built into the main frame. This is a small square garden which is surrounded on all four sides by the house. Fruit and vegetable trees abound here. Flanking the kitchen, is a quaint bathroom with a niche built into the wall for firewood to be placed therein to heat the water for bath. This water was boiled in a huge copper vessel 'Tosta'. The adjoining toilet is typically goan as it used to be 'Au Naturel'. Raised platforms provided seats with outlets for the porcine livestock to clear the waste ! An oddity for sure but very common and very accepted. The corridor adjoining the kitchen leads to a kitchen, bath, toilet and living accommodations for the hired help. Over the past two years, we have been concentrating on mining of Bauxite Ore from our mines locates ion South Goa (India), with an estimated deposit of 70 million tonnes of various grades. Our ore is being used by Aluminum Companies, Cement Manufacturers and Alum/Chemical Industries in India.

Apart from our indigenous clientele, whose off-take figures run into large quantities, we have, so far, exported Bauxite Ore to U.A.E., Japan, Europe, Hong Kong, Ukraine and lately to Iran.

Our exports are handled through the Port of Mormugao, Goa, India, which is one of the largest ports in India and a natural harbour. The distance from our mines to this port, by road, is about 55 kilometers. We are also nearer to Karwar Port, which is situated on the Goa Karnataka border and the distance from our mines to Karwar port is about 57 kilometers. The major two rivers of Goa, that is, Mandovi and Zuari meet the Arabian Sea and by virtue of this, our mines are in the proximity of the Arabian Sea. At the Port of Mormugao, we can load 40,000 tonnes to 60,000 tonnes at the berth provided the vessel is grab-fitted.

Unlike the situation that existed in the yesteryears, our mines are fully mechanized and we are fully equipped with various types of modern machineries like Excavators, Wheel Loaders, Wagon Drill, Dumpers, Vibrating Screens, Crushers, Conveyor Belts, etc., with a team of skilled personnel operating the machineries and with the facilities available at our disposal, we can produce large quantities of Bauxite Ore in the shortest possible time to cater to the needs of the end-product industries over the globe. Our deposits are homogeneous and gibbsetic ore requiring low temperature for digestion.

We are also equipped with a full-fledged laboratory with well trained Chemists / Geologists and a team of most experienced staff in the field of mining works.

Our grades are in the range of 45% to 47% 47% to 48% and 50% to 51%

The Bauxite Mines are situated in South Goa over an area of 1263.678 HA. with estimated reserves of 70 million tons. These are metallurgical grade bauxite which can also be used for various applications such as cement, alumina chemicals, etc. The mines are situated also in the close proximity of two major ports, viz. Marmugoa Port and Betul Port.

INDIA'S LONGEST LATERITE SCULPTURE

This National Landmark captures Sant Mirabai singing devoutly to the almighty strumming on her ektara and measuring 14 metres by 5 metres.

This monolith was single-handedly chiseled by the artist Maendra Jocelino Araujo Alavres . Sculpted in Greco-Roman style from a vast expanse of laterite stone in August 1994 at Loutolim, Goa, in a record time of 30 days.

In the halo around devout Mirabai's head, one sees a tinge of Buddhist's influence but the kumkum on the forehead, the anklet, the patti on her wrists and the paizona around her ankles give the sculpture a characteristic Indian appeal. One also notices a particular type of ornament called fullam (flowers of gold) worn by the Goan Hindu women distinctly adorning Mirabai's head. A lotus and half sun on the ektara adds to the mystic of Sant Mirabai.

This work has been cited in the Limca Book of Records as the Longest Laterite Sculpture in India.

A wide, low beamed room akin to an attic is led up to by a huge metal door. This room has gun holes strategically placed in defence against the dacoity of the Rane clan.

The whole household has walls in painted design - modified to accommodate the need of colour and the age in which the work was done.
